What is a Co-op?

Food Co-Ops were born in the USA as a response to the social and economic hardships of the Industrial Revolution. As people adapted and moved from the country into the cities, they needed stores to supply their food. Companies were taking advantage of workers and the food supply chain, so groups took it into their own hands to ensure they were getting adequate, equitable food supply to their communities.
Cooperatives around the world generally operate according to the same core principles and values, adopted by the International Cooperative Alliance in 1995. Cooperatives trace the roots of these principles to the first modern cooperative founded in Rochdale, England, in 1844.
